Kickstart A Healthy Pregnancy
Preconception Care: Before You Get Pregnant
Most people are aware of the importance of early prenatal care. Now health experts are taking this care a step further and advising women to begin prenatal care before conception. The better a woman and her partner’s health is before she gets pregnant, the better their chances are at having a healthy pregnancy and baby.
The following is a list of things you can do to help improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy and baby.
- Let your provider know you are planning on starting a family
- Be sure to eat a balanced diet. Avoid excessive caffeine & artificial sweeteners
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and drugs as all have been proven harmful during pregnancy
- Be sure to check with your healthcare provider that the medications you may currently be on are safe during pregnancy
- Be sure to exercise on a regular basis
- Avoid toxic exposure to gases, fumes, or other toxic substances that may be harmful
- For men, a semen analysis is recommended as well as a physical
